Wakeley gets the stage win and bonus time, but confirms he will not finish Giro.
Indeed, the top two riders of May will bow out next week to travel to the MTB Marathon championships in Georgia. After impressive displays in the opening 3 stages, the pair will join women’s GC leader Kaitlyn Patterson on a sojourn to Georgia.
With Sean Kickbush a non-starter on Stage 3, Keegan Myers looks like the heir-apparent to the maglia rosa after the finale next week. He’ll be counting on Matt Myers to help control affairs, with only wunderkind Braiden Voss entering with any hope of upsetting the M22 1-2 result. He’s sitting just under two minutes back from Keegan, but under a minute from Matt. With other riders looking for a stage win, he could find some cooperation from former rivals.
There are two women left in their GC, with Patterson handing over the women’s win to Erica O’Hearn next week. Erica has put in some great times in her debut this spring and has been one of the most consistent riders in this Giro.
Also likely to win something by default is Cody Sovis, who is the last surviving singlespeeder to complete three completed three stages. If there are two things Cody does well, it’s win Grand Fondos and races in which no one else competes.
The other classifications should be thrilling, however, with the Mountains deceptively close. Vanias leads with 24 points ahead of Luke Tjosvold and Jeff Owens, but with Vanias not taking any more points, the other pair will be duking it out over the Boonenberg for double points. Don’t count out a geared Steve Andriese, either, who is just 2 points down from that pair, equal with Jason Johnson.
It’s a similar scenario with the Points classification, although a bit less up for grabs. Tjosvold is equal with Vanias there, and if he can register even 2 points on the Truee de Madeleine’s, he’ll be in the clear. The real kicker will be if anyone can overhaul Alex for second and pick up some valuable WorldTour points in the process, with Sean Kickbush the most likely candidate.
