The first Top Banana Competition of 2013 marked the first leaders and the first fat bike race to make the program.

Jorden Wakeley fired off the first shot of the year, taking the win at St. Fatty’s Day to start off the Top Banana Competition program in style. The Giant of Grayling will need as many points as he can muster to stave off the likes of roadies like Mike Anderson and Alex Vanias if he has any hopes of being in contention come September.

Scott Quiring tallied in for second on the day, giving him four points. It was more Einstein in third and fourth, with Top Banana contender Jason Lowetz in third and Ryan Kennedy just behind. Equaling his Top Banana points from last season in a single race, and with a single point, Yours Truly is officially on the board as well.

In the Women’s division, Chelsea Strate will look to keep the leader’s seat warm for teammates Johanna Schmidt and Mackenzie Woodring. She’s ahead of Melissa Ryba, who could very well threaten the leader board all year for Hagerty’s women’s squad alongside Susan Vigland, Lauri Brockmiller and Bridgit Widrig. Maddi Miller, Christina Peek and Michele Ryan will enjoy their time in the limelight, but they will probably be overrun before they return to action at Mud, Sweat and Beers.

The next stop is this Sunday at Inside Out Cyclocross in Greenville, Michigan. This has been an insanely fun series and should feature some top shelf competition as riders gear up for the first A race of the year, Barry-Roubaix.

kolo t.c. would also like to welcome Carter’s Compost as the title sponsor of the 2013 Top Banana Competition. Compost Boy and the gang are working on bringing sustainable, responsible lifestyles to Traverse City and have done some amazing things to promote a better Traverse City. Yours Truly also like the chickens there.
